Forma Mechanica – Lesther Gutierrez

Forma Mechanica brings together painting, layered acrylic works, sculpture, animation, and immersive installation to explore how human presence can be constructed through space, light, material, and perception.

At the centre of the exhibition is a simple question: How little is required before we recognize another human presence?

Rather than treating the figure as a fixed image, Gutierrez breaks it apart. Anatomy becomes fragment, geometry, transparency, shadow, and movement. Across layered acrylic works, separate planes of foreground, body, and atmosphere intersect as light passes through them. Forms shift with the viewer’s position, allowing the figure to emerge, disappear, and reassemble through perception.

This relationship between body and space expands across Avant Garde Gallery. On the Ground Floor, paintings, sculptural works, and transparent constructions establish a visual language suspended between the organic and the mechanical. In the Underground, that language moves beyond the object and into an immersive environment, placing the viewer within the same conditions of light, movement, space, and perception that shape the works above.

The transition transforms viewing into participation. What begins as an image becomes an encounter; what appears solid becomes dependent on perspective.

Ultimately, Forma Mechanica considers presence as something we not only see, but construct–through fragments, relationships, and shifting encounters between ourselves and the spaces we inhabit.

About the Artist

Lesther Gutierrez is a multidisciplinary artist born in El Salvador and based in Toronto, Canada. Working across painting, animation, design, sculpture, and metalwork, his practice brings together abstraction, geometric structure, and the organic contours of the human form.

With a background spanning fine art, design, and animation, Gutierrez approaches his work through a strong sense of movement, rhythm, and visual storytelling. His broader creative practice also extends into music, where his experience as a songwriter, musician, and producer further informs his interest in composition, atmosphere, and movement.

Across disciplines, Gutierrez explores the relationship between the organic and the constructed, developing a visual language that considers identity, perception, and the human experience through form, material, and abstraction.
