What happens when a career spent formulating colour becomes a practice devoted to creating with it?
Avant Garde welcomes Mila Susak with Formulated, an exhibition of paintings and sculpture shaped by an extraordinary intersection of art and science.
Before turning her focus to the studio, Susak spent her career in cosmetic research and development, including as the former Head of R&D for MAC cosmetics Canada engineering the pigments, textures and formulas through which millions expressed themselves.
Now, the scientist becomes the artist.
Formulated brings those worlds together. Material becomes medium. Experimentation becomes expression. Colour, once engineered, is set free.
Avant Garde has always existed as a meeting place for different disciplines, ideas and people. With Formulated, those worlds don’t simply meet—they become inseparable.
About the artist
Mila Susak is an artist working across painting and sculpture, bringing a background in cosmetic science to her exploration of color and texture. As the former Head of Research and Development at MAC Cosmetics Canada, she developed an extensive understanding of pigments and formulations—knowledge that offers a distinctive foundation for her artistic practice.
In the studio, Susak carries this engagement with materials into a more personal exploration of creative expression. Her practice connects the curiosity of scientific research with the possibilities of art, allowing experimentation to guide the relationship between color and form. Across her paintings and sculptures, materials become a starting point for discovery, extending a career devoted to developing color into an ongoing investigation of its expressive potential.
